How do you reset the oil life on a Honda CR-V in Panama City?

Reset the oil life only after an oil change: turn the power mode on, open Maintenance Minder from the steering-wheel or touchscreen menu, select the oil life item, hold Enter until the reset options appear, then confirm so the display returns to 100%. Newer CR-Vs rely on the steering-wheel or touchscreen menu, and older ones have the dash SELECT/RESET knob, so check your model year first.

Keep reading below, then schedule a test drive in Panama City. Bringing your own numbers to the lot settles this faster than any spec sheet.

How do you reset the oil life on a Honda CR-V after an oil change?

Set the power mode to ON, press the home button, roll the left selector wheel until Maintenance Minder is displayed, and press it to open the screen. Press and hold the left selector wheel for about 10 seconds to enter reset mode. Roll the wheel to select the oil life item, or All due items, then press it to reset.

The steps below come straight from Honda’s manual for the CR-V.

1. Set the power mode to ON.

2. Press the (home) button.

3. Roll the left selector wheel until the Maintenance Minder screen is displayed.

4. Press the left selector wheel to go to the Maintenance Minder screen.

6. Roll the left selector wheel to select a maintenance item to reset, or to select All due items (You can also select Cancel to end the process).

7. Press the left selector wheel to reset the selected item.

8. Repeat from step 5 for other items you wish to reset.

Honda’s manual says the dealer resets the display after required service, and that if someone other than a dealer does the service, the owner resets it. Failing to reset it leads to incorrect maintenance intervals, which can lead to serious mechanical problems. Engine oil life is shown as a percentage. Maintenance Due Soon appears at 15 to 6 percent, Maintenance Due Now at 5 to 1 percent, and Maintenance Past Due once the oil life runs out.

Which oil life reset method does your Honda CR-V’s model year use?

Honda’s manuals list different reset controls by model year. Cars from 2024 to 2027 with an A-type meter work from the Home button and the left selector wheel, and cars with a B-type meter use the right selector wheel. From 2017 to 2019, the TRIP knob displays Maintenance Minder, and holding it for at least 10 seconds makes the display blink. Cars from 2012 to 2016 use the SELECT/RESET knob, pressed repeatedly until engine oil life appears.

The 2012 to 2016 SELECT/RESET method is covered in the section for older CR-Vs below. Your model year decides which steps apply to your car.

How do you reset the oil life on a 2016 or older Honda CR-V?

Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine, press the SELECT/RESET knob until oil life shows, then hold it until the display blinks. Honda’s manual spells out the timing of each hold.

1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

2. Push and release the SEL/RESET knob repeatedly until the engine oil life indicator is displayed.

3. Press and hold the SEL/RESET knob for about 10 seconds. The engine oil life indicator and the maintenance item code(s) will blink, then release the knob. NOTE: If you are resetting the Maintenance Minder when the engine oil life is more than 15 %, make sure any maintenance item(s) requiring service are done before resetting the display.

4. Press and hold the SEL/RESET knob for another 5 seconds. The maintenance item code(s) will disappear, and the engine oil life will reset to “100 %.”

Honda’s manual warns that if a required service is done and the Maintenance Minder is not reset, or if it is reset without the service, the system will not show the proper maintenance timing. That can lead to serious mechanical problems, because there is no accurate record of when the required maintenance is needed.

How do you know the Honda CR-V oil life reset worked?

Look for the oil life figure returning to 100% and the maintenance codes clearing from the display. Honda’s manual lists what each main code and sub-item covers, so you can see which services the reset cleared.

The main codes are A and B. Code A means replace engine oil. Code B means replace engine oil and oil filter, and also inspect the front and rear brakes, tie rod ends, steering gearbox and boots, suspension components, driveshaft boots, brake hoses and lines, all fluid levels, and the exhaust and fuel lines.

The sub-items add further work to the main code. Sub-item 1 means rotate tires. Sub-item 2 means replace the air cleaner element, replace the dust and pollen filter, and inspect the drive belt. Sub-item 3 means replace transmission fluid. Sub-item 4 means replace spark plugs and inspect valve clearance. Sub-item 5 means replace engine coolant.

What if the oil life won’t reset or the Honda CR-V maintenance light stays on?

Honda’s manual says to reset the Maintenance Minder display only after you have performed the maintenance service. If the reset does not take, check that the service was completed and that the power mode is ON before you try the steps again.

If someone other than a dealer performed the service, the owner must reset the display, because failing to reset it results in incorrect maintenance intervals. On the CR-V Hybrid, the reset follows the same path: power mode ON, the home button, the left selector wheel to Maintenance Minder, then a 10-second hold on the wheel.

How do Panama City heat and short trips change Honda CR-V oil life?

Panama City runs hot for much of the year. NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the Panama City airport put the normal July high at 90.9 degrees Fahrenheit, with August close behind at 90.0 degrees.

Honda’s manual lists conditions that call for more frequent service. Driving in dusty conditions calls for replacing the air cleaner element every 15,000 miles (24,000 km). Driving primarily in urban areas with high soot from industry and diesel vehicles calls for replacing the dust and pollen filter at the same interval. Trailer towing or very low-speed mountain driving calls for more frequent transmission fluid changes than the Maintenance Minder recommends, every 25,000 miles (40,000 km).

If the engine oil life drops below 15%, the Maintenance Minder messages appear every time you set the power mode to ON. Those messages tell you when service is near, so you can book the oil change before the reset is due.

What oil does a Honda CR-V take?

The 1.5L turbocharged gasoline engine in front-wheel and all-wheel drive CR-Vs takes SAE 0W-20 oil, with a 3.7-US-quart (3.5 L) refill including the filter. The 2.0L hybrid takes 3.9 US quarts (3.7 L) for an oil change without the filter, and 4.2 US quarts (4.0 L) including the filter.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if you reset the Honda CR-V oil life before changing the oil?

Reset the oil life after the service is done, not before. Honda’s manual says a reset without the service means the system will not show the proper maintenance timing.

Does the Honda CR-V Hybrid reset its oil life the same way?

The hybrid follows the same steps: power mode ON, the home button, the left selector wheel to Maintenance Minder, then a 10-second hold to enter reset mode. Choose the oil life item or All due items, then press to reset.

Does resetting the oil life clear the tire rotation and other maintenance reminders?

Resetting clears only the items you select. Choose All due items to reset every item that is due, or select the individual items you have just serviced.

How long can you drive with the Honda CR-V oil life at 0%?

Honda’s manual does not give a number of miles for this. Once the oil life passes its service life, the Maintenance Minder shows Maintenance Past Due, so book the oil change as soon as you see that message.

What oil does a Honda CR-V take?

The 1.5L turbo takes SAE 0W-20 with a 3.7-US-quart (3.5 L) refill including the filter. The 2.0L hybrid takes 4.2 US quarts (4.0 L) including the filter, or 3.9 US quarts (3.7 L) for an oil change without the filter.

How do I reset the oil life indicator on my 2008 Honda CRV?

Use the SEL/RESET knob method from Honda’s manual for the third-generation CR-V. Turn the vehicle to ON without starting the engine, then push and release the SEL/RESET knob repeatedly until the engine oil life indicator appears. Press and hold the knob for about 10 seconds until the oil life and maintenance codes blink, then release it. Press and hold it again for another 5 seconds, and the codes disappear while the oil life resets to “100 %.” One caveat: finish the oil change first, because Honda’s manual says a reset without the service means the system will not show the proper maintenance timing.
