Get Your Motor Running with Honda Electric
Honda Motors has revealed plans for a variety of future EVs to help the company make the transition from gas-powered to electric cars. Well known for their internal combustion engines, Honda engineers are hard at work on plans for more practical and affordable EVs.
As of 2022, the Japanese automaker has one subcompact EV on the road. The new Honda plan is to launch 30 electric vehicles globally by the year 2030. In North America, Honda will work with General Motors on two battery electric SUVs to be ready in 2024.
The Honda announcement mentioned that the partnership with GM would produce lower-cost, higher-volume EVs to launch by 2027. These will utilize next-generation Ultium battery cells for use in smaller and more affordable models.
Make the Transition to Honda Hybrids
Before the roll out of new Honda EVs, the automaker will produce several gas-electric hybrid vehicles, like the new 2022 CR-V Hybrid out this year. This will be followed by hybrid versions of the Honda Accord and the Honda Civic.
These new models will replace the Honda Insight Hybrid, which ended its production in June of this year. Honda sees these hybrid vehicles as an important first step in transitioning the auto industry to full electrification.
Zero Emissions on the Horizon
Honda will first focus on hybrid vehicles with a goal of selling 50% hybrid versions of the Honda CR-V, the Honda Accord, and the Honda Civic. After that the automaker expects to roll out battery-electrics that will account for 40% of North American auto sales by the year 2030, and 100% by 2040.
According to Honda Global CEO Toshihiro Mibe, the company’s vision is to first reduce greenhouse gas emissions, then to achieve full carbon neutrality for its products and its corporate activities by the year 2050.
